Club

History

Research Baseball Club was founded on the 23rd of March 1955 at “Yarramie” Thompson Crescent, Research, and was one of the two founding clubs in the then Diamond Valley Baseball Association. The club moved to its current location in the early 1970’s and added “Lower Plenty” to its name, and became known with the baseball community as the “Research Lower Plenty Roadrunners”.With this move, our player numbers grew, and by the mid 1970’s the seniors fielded 3 teams and a Winter junior program was established. In 1977 our first clubhouse was built by the then Shire of Eltham.

The club continued to grow throughout the 80’s, 90’s and into the 2000’s with a great deal of success along the way, including two Division 1 premierships during this time.

The continued development of our juniors saw the addition of a Summer program in 2015 meaning we were now the only club in the City of Banyule offering baseball 12 months of the year, another first for the club.

In 2019 the club established its first ever women’s team, the only one in the Diamond Valley at that time. In 2021, we fielded our first women’s summer team, becoming the first club in our region to offer women’s baseball in winter and summer.

In conjunction with the City of Banyule, Research Lower Plenty Baseball Club constructed an indoor hitting facility, another first, giving us the flexibility to train, rain, hail or shine any day of the week.

The following year, the club moved into a brand new modern clubhouse. Maintaining its original name, the Ian Hulmes Pavillion, we are a club that is proud of what we offer our players and their families. For our club the essence of community sport is a place where young men and women can train and play, catch up and talk, observe, laugh and most importantly, belong.

70th Anniversary, 2025

On Saturday 2 August 2025, the Research Lower Plenty Baseball Club proudly celebrated its 70th anniversary with a special evening at the Heidelberg Golf Club. The event brought together past and present players, coaches, families, and supporters to honour seven decades of history, community, and passion for the game.

The night was filled with laughter, stories, and heartfelt tributes to those who have shaped the club’s journey since 1955. Guests enjoyed a warm and lively atmosphere, reconnecting with old teammates and making new memories. A commemorative video premiered during the evening, capturing highlights from across the decades and reminding everyone of the strength and spirit that define the Roadrunner legacy.

John Goller Snr Award - Best Club Person

The Club Person of The Year Award recognises an individual or in some instances a couple, who has strived above and beyond the normal call of duty for the club in a voluntary capacity during the year for the overall benefit of the club and its members.

This Award is dedicated to John Goller Senior, who was presented with this Award in his honour in 1981.  John was a founding member of the Research Lower Plenty Baseball Club, and President for seven terms.   At the time of the club’s establishment, John was a formidable force in developing the Diamond Valley Baseball League.

Ian Hulmes Award

The Ian Hulmes Award is a perpetual trophy awarded to the junior player that best represents the spirit of how Ian played the game. It is not necessarily awarded to the best junior player, it is recognition of a junior member who has contributed to the club that goes above and beyond just training and playing. The attributes of being a great teammate, is encouraging, is very coachable, a natural leader on the field and assists in other ways when the opportunity presents are some of the criteria for recognition.

Ian Hulmes was an outstanding player and member of the Research Lower-Plenty Baseball Club for 30 years. He won 17 Senior club awards, including 5 best & fairest awards. He represented the Diamond Valley on 6 occasions and was twice selected to the VPBL All-Star team to represent Victoria. As a long serving coach & committee member Ian was recognised with a life membership in 1982.

Sadly, Ian passed away on June 16, 1990 at Glenauburn Park while playing baseball, the game he loved. His legacy continued at the club with his son Steven playing when time permits, and Ian’s wife Robyn still an active member through her scoring on a Saturday afternoon.

Pictured above is Ian Hulmes with his son Steven (bottom right) and daugher Katherine (bottom left).

Robbie Meates Club Champion Award

The recipient of this award is the 1st 9’s Most Valuable Player for the winter season.

Robert “Robbie” Meates was a player, mentor, Club Coach, committee person, Life Member and was one of the building blocks that lead to a prolonged period of success in our clubs history, particularly during the 1980’s and 90’s. Robbie was a gifted player and competed in both State and Australian representative sides.

In his chosen sport, and at a club that he called home, Robbie was a reserved sportsman. Our club is indebted to Robbie who volunteered as a junior coach and in 1986 was senior club coach. Rob Meates passed away in February, 2020.
